The Native Village of Gakona is a rural Alaskan village meaning Rabbit River. Village boundaries lie within the Ahtna region of south central Alaska at the confluence of the Copper and Gakona Rivers, 20 miles northeast of Glennallen. The village is at mile 4.8 on the Tok Cutoff just east of the Richardson Highway. The Native Village of Gakona is a federally recognized Tribe and the governing body for the village. Gakona is a growing community and is a traditional village of the Ahtna Athabascan people. Ahtna people have resided in this vicinity for thousands of years and have had an important place in history as a hunting and fishing village used by other villages who migrated there to gather food and wildlife resources.
